Garnes Labs’ HackIT 2k17 concludes….

“HackIT” Inter-University Hackathon organized by Garnes Labs (Pvt.) Ltd was held on the 14th of January 2017 at its venue at Battaramulla. The competition was based on “Capture the Flag” kind of contest on Information Security. This was the first time a contest of this nature was held. The organizers received applications from teams of 45 universities, both private and state, for the Hackathon and the best 4 teams were selected to compete.

In the competition, members of the Participating Teams were presented with five different scenarios to be solved by hacking within a time duration of six hours.

The student team “Perseus” representing Sri Lanka Institute of Technology (SLIIT) emerged winners of the contest whereas the team “Smurfs” representing the University of Moratuwa came in runners-up. The members of the winning team are A.M Samitha Madhusanka, Y.M.R.A. Yapa Bandara, A.S. Weerasinghe and A.J.M.N.T. Bandara whereas the members of the runners-up team are Y.K.K. Arachchi, E.M.M.L. Ekanayake, S.A.S. Dinuka, S.A.I.M. Sudasingha and D.C.B. Wickramarathna.

The event was graced by the Chief Executive Officer of Garnes Labs (Pvt.) Ltd: Mr. Tore Foss. It was also entertained by guest speeches delivered by experts on the field of Information Security. The guest speakers consisted of: Mr. Parakum Pathirana, Vice President of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) Chapter of Sri Lanka, Mr. Loshan Wickramasekara, Information Security Manager at Financial Sector Security Incident Response Team (FINSCRIT), Mr. Aleksander Pederson, Chief Technical Officer of Cyberon Security AS, Mr. Kavinga Yapa Abeywardena, Lecturer at Sri Lanka Institute of Technology (SLIIT) and Mr. Chathuranga Gunatillake, Information Security Expert at TechCERT. Mr. Haran Mamankaran, Senior Security Operation Centre Analyst at Dialog Axiata PLC and Mr. Farash Smat, Cyber Security Manager at Dialog PLC were among the other guests of this event.

Garnes Labs team, Thevin Siriwardana, Vijini Wickramanayake, Dilusha Gonagala and S. Nilaxshaan conducted a Tech Talks session for the participants.

The Board of Judges consisted of Mr. Loshan Wickramasekara, Mr. Boominda Anushka, Systems Engineer at Millennium Information Technologies (Pvt.) Ltd, Mr. Chathuranga Gunatillake and Mr. Kavinga Yapa Abeywardena.

Introduction to the ISACA chapter of Sri Lanka, explanation of common types of Cyber attacks prevailing in the world, View of Cyber Threats from the Financial Sector, Introduction to YR Security, Analysis on Bitcoin and Blockchain and Introduction to the Dark Web and means to use it were some of the notable subjects discussed during sessions of Tech Talks.
